Angola

Angola is recovering from a civil war that lasted almost thirty years. Poverty and unemployment are some of the challenges that people face daily. Angola has the world’s highest infant mortality rate and almost 6% of the population is living with HIV/AIDS.

By 2010 there will be an estimated 330,000 AIDS orphans. Many Angolans live in remote areas and the remaining landmines make it difficult for government authorities, health ministries, pastors and ministers to reach all the villages.

  • Programmes such as The Honey that Kills are educating people about HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.

  • Combatentes Para Christo ministers to Angolan soldiers and those trying to re-enter civilian life after years of fighting.

  • Project Hannah’s Women of Hope offers encouragement to women. Project Hannah prayer groups across the country meet regularly.

Reaching Out to HIV/AIDS Victims (Umbundu)

6% of the Angolan population is presently infected with HIV/AIDS. Much of this could be prevented if information were available to remote, rural areas of Angola. TWR is preparing a magazine-style programme to inform, encourage and care for victims and families with HIV/AIDS. The programme is being developed in the Umbundu language which is the largest ethnic group in Angola. It will impact Umbundu speakers as the programme shares with them the reality of HIV/AIDS and ways to help them change their sexual behaviour in hope that the rate of affected people may decrease by 2011.

A radio production on HIV/AIDS directed to the Umbundu people in Angola will contribute towards the Sixth Millennium Development Goal, which is to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases. It will specifically contribute to the goal’s target: to halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015.

Through this programme, Trans World Radio – Angola will continue to contribute to the improvement of the lives of those in our communities by giving accurate information within the cultural context.

Your gift of R 100.00 per month (or whatever you decide) can keep this programme on air.
